In the first beta version of iOS 12.1 for developers released a week ago, it was found support for electronic sim cards (eSIM).
According to Apple, support for eSIM technology should appear on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max “with an update of iOS 12 later this year.”
iOS 12.1 beta 1 contains a new option in Settings ? Cellular Communication ? Add Operator. Then you scan the QR code provided by the operator to start using its services without removing the main SIM card.
Details can also be entered manually if there is no QR code. Among the necessary details: the address of SM-DP +, the activation code and the confirmation code. On the smartphone you can save several electronic SIM cards, but you can not use them at the same time.
The eSIM feature is currently available only as a beta. It does not work, because the operators have not yet activated the technology. The largest US operators are activating eSIM support for the new iPhone later this fall.
Recall that the new iPhones are the first with support for two SIM cards: one regular nano-SIM and one eSIM. Such support will allow using two operators at once on one device, which is very useful for those who travel frequently. The iOS 12 call screen displays the agent through which the call is made. iMessage and FaceTime in iOS 12.1 will contain new settings for operator selection.
“The operator can be selected for each contact. You can configure iOS so that the system automatically uses the last number for the contact through which you called it. “
Among other new features of iOS 12.1: FaceTime conferences, Memoji synchronization, Face ID support in horizontal mode, and hints that the new iPad Pro will have a design like the iPhone X.
