Experts of Digital Foundry, a technical unit of the authoritative portal Eurogamer, summed up the results of the past year and compiled a list of the most technologically advanced games of 2017. In total, this not especially voluminous list included seven titles. What is noteworthy, many of those who entered the top projects were not designed for the “bar platform”, but for consoles. Moreover, the leader of the list compiled by the masters of his work was an exclusive for Sony PlayStation 4.
The fifth line “won” the original Gravity Rush 2 for the PlayStation 4; the game got its place for the non-standard and scrupulous approach of developers to the implementation of the physical model, as well as for extremely high-quality optimization – the project is stable and without “drawdowns” FPS works on both the PS4 Pro and the base PS4. Similar advantages, according to experts, and has the owner of the fourth place – indie-title Playbook; among other things, the temporary PC-exclusive can boast of an advanced simulation of the “behavior” of liquids, which is as close as possible to the real one.
Three of the leaders opened the “Best Game of the Year” by the versions of The Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards – the masterpiece The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch and Wii U; for not very impressive at first glance, the BotW image hides one of the most technological engines of our time, which provides a huge open world and a lot of interactive objects – all on the hardware that is very lagging behind the top consoles. The silver medalist, Assassin’s Creed Origins, also impressed the experts with the scope, high detail of the environment, the range of drawing, the state-of-the-art lighting system and more than acceptable, taking into account all the above, performance.
Headed the list, we will repeat, the main exclusive PlayStation 4 of 2017 – Horizon Zero Dawn. The Decima engine, DF experts say, allowed Guerilla Games studio to create one of the most realistic open worlds with the best lighting and high detail of objects, as well as high-quality and smooth animation of everything from the main heroine and NPC to snow and plants. Of the few complaints of experts, it is worth noting that the static nature of some elements of the landscape and not the most natural water. However, all mentioned advantages, together with impressive optimization, were crossed, in the opinion of Digital Foundry employees, by minor project shortcomings.
This, by the way, is not the only top published by Digital Foundry at the end of last year. Experts also analyzed which games go to the PlayStation 4 Pro better than the “most powerful console in the history” of the Xbox One X. Such titles were surprisingly many, and Titanfall 2 deserves special mention. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, FIFA 18, Fortnite and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. However, it should be noted that from a visual point of view, with a few exceptions, all projects look a little better on the Microsoft console, but in terms of performance, the “proshka” greatly surpasses the lauded One X.
