The US Qualcomm is one of the world ‘s largest manufacturers of processors for mobile devices. Incidentally, you probably have an Android smartphone with one of its SoC’s or “engines” inside it. Now, we get to know the Snapdragon 855, its new high-end processor for the smartphones of 2019!
First, at this moment Qualcomm holds its annual conference in Hawaii where it presents us with new goals and products. In this sense, we are now getting to know your Snapdragon 855, the processor to take into account in Android smartphones of 2019.
Second, Qualcomm has several processor lines. From its low-range SoC’s – 400 range – to the top line – the 800 range. We also have the new mid-range/mid-range Snapdragon 700 line as well as the mid-range line – the SD6XX.
Thirdly, as our colleagues at Pplware have told us, it has been 11 years since the American manufacturer has built its position of respect in this market. In fact, its products are already present in more than one billion mobile devices, thus proving its reliability.
Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 855 has arrived!
So it was time for us to meet the successor to the Snapdragon 845 that dominated the technology landscape in 2018. So comes the new Snapdragon 855, the SoC (System on Chip) that will dignify every Android smartphone from the top 2019 That is, it will be “the processor” to take into account, at least for the vast majority of Android manufacturers today. It will also be a rival to the Apple A12 Bionic as well as Kirin 980 from Huawei, among others.
Looking now at the main innovations, or vectors of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 we have 3 to 4 main points. However, we do not yet know all its technical specifications, just its general guidelines.
That is, for now Qualcomm has just known the areas in which this new Snapdragon 855 will stand out against its predecessor and against the competition. In this sense, we will highlight the main features of the project.
Snapdragon 855 Features
1 – Snapdragon 855 will bring the 5G to Android smartphones
First of all, we have the clear guidance of the whole processor to bring us this new standard of telecommunications. In this sense, we have here a new modem, the Snapdragon X24 that will mediate the arrival of 5G to Android smartphones.
In short, this will be the “engine”, the processor that will bridge the current standard 4G and 5G that is already being prepared. Something that according to Qualcomm itself will dominate the technological current as of next year.
2- Artificial Intelligence and construction at 7nm
Secondly, this new Snapdragon 855 from Qualcomm is manufactured using the 7nm (nanometer) process. In this way will equal the Kirin 980 as well as the Apple A12, all of them already with this lithograph.
In addition to greater performance and energy efficiency, the new processor will open up new possibilities for Artificial Intelligence (AI). In that sense we will have faster learning algorithms than ever before!
According to Qualcomm itself, the AI will benefit from a 3X (three times) superior performance – here compared to the current generation with the SD845. In this sense, AI will become more capable and useful in the day-to-day of our Android smartphones.
In short, thanks to the fourth iteration of the processing core dedicated to machine learning and AI, this whole area will be strengthened. Here as well as the image signal processor (ISP) that will improve both photography and video.
3- Strengthening the security of authentication mechanisms
Thirdly we have enhanced the security and reliability of authentication mechanisms for Android smartphones. Here more specifically, for fingerprint readers built into the screen.
Therefore, the new Snapdragon 855 from Qualcomm already supports the ultrasonic fingerprint reader. This type is safer than the optical reader present in OnePlus6T,, among other Android smartphones.
In short, with this new processor, we will have a whole new generation of Android smartphones equipped with ultrasonic readers. Something that will benefit the end-user of these devices by setting them up as a more secure solution.
Now, we have to wait for the release of the full Snapdragon 855 features from Qualcomm. Already on another note, the first smartphones (and mobile devices) with this processor will begin to reach the market in early 2019.
Then we’ll get to know your real-life performance and what the real advantages are for previous generations and competing for offers.
