The Korea Times reported that PUBG Corp, a subsidiary of Korean publisher Bluehole and responsible for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, is suing Epic Games for copyright infringement related to the game Fortnite – specifically, in relation to using Battle Royale mode.

A representative of PUBG Corp. said the record was made last Friday at Seoul’s central district court against Epic Games Korea.

“We filed a lawsuit to protect our copyright in January,” he said.

The novel between PUBG and Fortnite has lasted for months, starting after the inclusion of a Battle Royale mode in the Epic Games game – gaining immense popularity in the process, to the point of overcoming Battlegrounds in terms of popularity.

The criticism – and legal action – of PUBG Corp. are mainly due to the fact that the game uses as a graphics engine the Unreal Engine 4, property of Epic Games and also used in Fortnite.

Should the case be judged in favour of the studio of PUBG, there are high chances that Fortnite cannot be released in South Korea.
