There is no doubt that the keyboard of our smartphone is extremely important and, currently on Android, there are two great keyboards that fight for the first position, Google Gboard and Microsoft Swiftey. Swiftkey has remained an isolated leader in this segment for many years, receiving competition from Gboard for more recent times.
Now, the Google keyboard has received new functionality in the beta version of its application. It was some time ago that we talked about implementing an Emoji bar, but it has only just been launched for users integrated in the test program.
This new implementation has as main objective to help you express better and faster. However, its true usefulness has yet to be proven, especially by the way it behaves in this initial phase.
Emoji bar on Google Gboard was very poorly thought out
We will still need to wait a little longer to understand if these problems exist just because they are an early stage of development. However, it would be expected that Google will prepare a new feature a little better before launching it in the test program.
Currently, the Emoji bar is very little useful, serving practically just to “steal” screen space, being positioned above the toolbar. From what has been revealed so far, it seems that it only presents a list of the most popular emojis, and nothing more.
Furthermore, at the end of the bar we have an icon that gives access to the emoji library, being the second to be presented by Gboard. When you slide your finger on the bar, instead of showing more emojis, just a button is displayed to remove it.
We will need to wait to see if Google will make considerable improvements in this new bar of Emojis but, judging by what it has to offer so far, it doesn't look like it will become very popular.
