During a broadcast in early February, DOOM Eternal director Hugo Martin was asked if id Software had already considered developing a female Doom Slayer. Not only did he respond in the affirmative, he revealed more details on the subject.
Martin said the studio would like to do this in a way that would have a real effect on the gameplay. The intention would be to explore ways to make better use of the female version of the protagonist, instead of simply changing the gender.
I thought about it, actually …
If we did that, I would like it to be lethal. I think it’s interesting how it would affect the glory deaths, the weapons, the fighting style. There would be all the aggression, for sure, but a different type of aggression.
I would really strive to allow it to impact the gameplay in a way that is meaningful. I definitely thought about it a lot.
The director compared the gameplay of Doom Guy to a Ferrari, in the sense that playing with the character is fun at any speed.
If Doom Guy is a Ferrari, so what would a Doom Girl be?
How would that affect things and what kind of analogies would you draw from that to allow it to influence the experience? It would definitely be cool!
So far, there is no female lead in the DOOM series – nor in the reboot of 2016 and much less in the classics of the years 90.
DOOM Eternal will have BattleMode maps and “Invasion” mode at 2021
It should come as no surprise to fans, but id Software will release more updates for DOOM Eternal at 2021. The studio released a letter to players on Twitter, where they discussed future plans for the game.
What’s new in BattleMode, the “Invasion” mode, the second part of DLC The Ancient Gods and the PS5 and Xbox Series upgrade should arrive later this year.
