Market analyst firm SensorTower on Thursday released a new report pointing out that 164 developers were able to generate their first million dollars in net revenue through the App Store during the year 2018, which represents a 13% compared to the 143 new millionaires registered in 2017. Google Play made 88 professionals win their first million in 2018; in 2017, there were 71 new millionaires.
Whereas iOS devices hold about 25% of the market, with the rest being dominated by Android almost entirely, Apple’s application revenue concludes that it has better profits for publishers than the competition.
However, it is also possible to conclude that the market shows more expansion to Android: while the App Store “created” 13% more new millionaires in 2018 compared to 2017, Google Play did 20% more year-on-year.
Among the reasons for growing revenues in 2018, SensorTower points to increased purchases made by applications, especially subscription services. Although the mobile games have shown good expansion in the period, the highlight was with applications related to lifestyle and fitness.
“Both categories with the highest year-over-year growth in terms of numbers among the new millionaire publishers – Lifestyle & Fitness – were those where there is a strong focus on revenue generation through signatures, be it tracking, meditation guided tour, premium romantic dating services, among others, “said SensorTower Director of Mobile Studies, Randy Nelson.
