Famous Nintendo hacker jailed for three years

Nintendo continues its brutal fight against pirates. The co-founder of the hacker group Team-Xecuter, who hacked the Nintendo Switch console and sold the hardware needed for this, received 40 months in prison.

Gary Bowser, co-founder of Team-Xecuter, the most notorious hacker of Switch and other Nintendo devices, has been sentenced to over three years in prison. This is in addition to fines totaling $14.5 million. Bowser not only hacked consoles and sold parts needed for piracy, but also ran a site that distributed unlicensed copies of games.

A hacker with a surprisingly fitting surname, Bowser, was arrested in late 2020 in the Dominican Republic and subsequently deported to the United States. Prosecutors asked for five years in prison, and Nintendo estimated the damage to the company at $65 million. One Nintendo Switch hack kit sold by a pirate cost $47.99.
