Anonymus declares "cyber war" against Russia for invasion of Ukraine

Hacking group Anonymous has declared "cyber warfare" against Vladimir Putin's government after it mounted a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Anonymus declares cyber war against Russia for invasion of Ukraine

The elusive computer experts made the announcement on their Twitter account last Thursday.

"The Anonymous collective is officially in cyber war against the Russian government," the group said on its Twitter account. About 30 minutes later, they announced they had taken down the website of the Kremlin-backed RT television channel, which broadcasts in Britain and has been heavily criticized for its coverage.

That is why since this morning, when trying to access said channel, only an error message is displayed that says "this site cannot be accessed".

Russia may be the target of hacking attempts

The declaration of cyber warfare raises the possibility that Russia could be the target of systematic hacking attempts in the coming days.

Ahead of Ukraine's invasion on Thursday, the country's government and banks were targeted in a massive cyberattack believed to have been carried out by Russia.

People on social media responded positively to Anonymous' declaration of cyber warfare against Putin.

One person wrote: “THANK YOU! Now, he works on draining his finances.” Another said: "You're great, thank you." A third wrote: “THANK YOU! I love you! The most beautiful thing".

Anonymous added in its tweet: "The #Anonymous collective has taken down the website of the #Russian propaganda station RT News."

Anonymous has previously targeted groups like the Ku Klux Klan and Islamic extremists.

Members are known as 'Anons' and are distinguished by their Guy Fawkes masks.

In July of last year, the collective warned Tesla founder Elon Musk that they planned to attack him after saying he wields too much power over cryptocurrency markets.
