Tesla will recall hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles due to safety issues.

Tesla is recalling about 500,000 electric vehicles due to trunk problems that increase the risk of an accident, according to the US auto safety regulator, France-Presse (AFP) reported yesterday, December 30.

The electric car company of American billionaire Elon Musk has conducted two separate recalls of its products to address issues that could lead to a backup camera shutting down or an unexpected opening of the hood. The automaker undertakes to inform each owner of defective electric vehicles free of charge and to eliminate this technical problem at its own expense.

Tesla and the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) formally acknowledged the problem last Wednesday.

The larger recall affected over 355,000 Model 3 vehicles, in which repeated opening and closing of the trunk could damage the rear view camera cable.

“The lack of a rear-view camera display could affect the rear view of the driver and increase the risk of a collision,” the NHTSA report said.

Tesla estimates that only one percent of recalled Model 3 vehicles contain a problem, and the company is not aware of any accidents or injuries due to the defect, NHTSA said.

Another recall concerns nearly 120,000 Model S vehicles that had a problem with the latch on the front boot hood. According to preliminary estimates, 14% of recalled electric vehicles have this problem.
