Russian engineers come close to testing the RD-0177 reusable rocket engine

The ignition system of the RD-0177 reusable oxygen-methane engine has been successfully tested in the test complex of the Voronezh rocket engine-building center (VTsRD) . The system will be adopted for the engines of the reentry stages of launch vehicles, including Amur-LNG. Now everything is ready for the next stage, during which the complete prototype engine will be tested.

Fire tests of the standard autonomous ignition system of the RD-0177 reusable oxygen-methane rocket engine were carried out with the participation of representatives of the Roscosmos State Corporation and the Progress Rocket and Space Center. Draft design of the engine, development of design documentation, as well as model tests to study the processes of ignition and mixture formation were carried out in the period from 2016 to 2019.

In the summer of 2020, a series of firing tests of a model gas generator of an experimental RD-0177 engine with a nominal thrust of 100 tons was carried out . In parallel, the design of promising reusable launch vehicles is underway, in particular, in August this year, it was announced that the outline design of the Amur-LNG launch vehicle had been completed. Also this year, the task was to consider the possibility of increasing the number of re-use of methane engines in rockets from 10 to 25 and 50.

During the tests, the autonomous ignition system of the reusable oxygen-methane engine RD-0177 was tested with an excess of inclusions within one starting day. So, instead of five switchings, the system made eight launches. “The next stage of our work will be testing a prototype of an oxygen-methane engine, ” said the chief designer of the KBKhA Viktor Gorokhov.
