Huawei is one of the companies that manufactures its own processors. Unlike what happens with Samsung, for example, the Chinese company uses only its processors in all its smartphones. After the launch of the Kirin 970 last year, we now expect the new Kirin 980.
The Kirin 970 was introduced in September last year and represents one of the company’s key milestones in this industry. It was the first SoC to hit the market with a dedicated neural processing unit. Something that ended up being followed in processors of other companies presented later.
This NPU unit proves to be extremely important for its application in the field of Artificial Intelligence. With this unit the smartphone will be able to perform AI tasks by itself. In addition to reducing the wait time for running them, it allows users to take advantage of AI capabilities even without an internet connection.
This was the embedded processor in Huawei Mate 10 and more recently in Huawei P20. Two of the main ranges of smartphones of the Chinese company. Two ranges that stand out from the competition for their Artificial Intelligence capabilities.
Now it’s time to look into the future. With the P20 arriving in stores, it is time for the Chinese company to start thinking about the next Mate line. For this, it is necessary to develop the new processor to be incorporated in it.
Kirin 980 could further distract Huawei from its competition
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 could be the first SoC of the American company to be produced in 7nm. However, it should only be presented more towards the end of 2018. When the new Kirin 980 should already be on the market equipping the new Huawei Mate 20.This will be the future Huawei Kirin 980, which is expected to be the first processor to reach the market developed in 7nm. Rumors indicate that the Kirin 980’s mass production could begin this quarter. This task could be handled by TSMC, one of the world’s largest processor development companies.
As for details of this processor, there is still not much to go forward. It is said that it can make use of Cortex-A75 cores, a new graphics and still bring Bluetooth 5.0. Of course the neural processing unit will continue to be present in this SoC, now even more powerful.
