MacBook – the most popular laptops in the world, and quite deservedly. Although the rulers are not updated as often as in some competitors, excellent design and build quality make the MacBook almost immortal – both morally and physically. Many people call buying a computer an investment – and in the case of a 12-inch MacBook or MacBook Pro, that’s exactly how it feels.
But MacBooks are also known for their prices. The company asks a lot for the opportunity to own a laptop with its logo on the lid. Most of those who want a poppy, banal cannot afford it. Fortunately, there are many alternatives in the form of Windows and Chromebook, which are almost as good, but they cost tens of thousands less.
Here they are – the best alternatives to the actual MacBooks to date
Dell XPS 13 (from $ 800)
The updated MacBook Pro was not very warmly received by users. The main reasons for this are two: the unnecessary TouchBar panel and the transition to just four USB-C connectors. Of course, if there is a possibility to reconcile with a small number of USB ports, the best choice will be a 13-inch MacBook Pro 13 “without a TouchBar for $ 1,300 in the minimum configuration.
Among laptops on Windows, there is a sufficient number of competitors to this Macbook. The same HP Specter 13 and Lenovo Yoga 920 are a worthy alternative. However, the best, in our opinion, is Dell XPS 13. so it’s no surprise that it is able to compare with Apple’s laptops. Its design is as beautiful as the MacBook Pro, enough power for most tasks, and a set of connectors is much broader.
Note that the price is listed for the modification with the Intel Core i3 processor of the seventh generation, 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. This is a worthy alternative to the MacBook Air, however, the modification for $ 1,000 is more suitable for the replacement of the MacBook Pro. It was equipped with a Core i5 processor and 8 GB of RAM. 128 GB of internal memory, however, remained intact, which may not be sufficient for most users.
The Dell display has a resolution of 1080p and does not look as impressive as the MacBook. However, in the maximum configuration, you do not even notice it – it is so powerful that it dwarfs all the shortcomings. The version with the Intel Core i7 of the eighth generation (the new architecture of Kaby Lake-R) will cost $ 1,400, which is far less expensive and, in fact, more expensive than the MacBook Pro without TouchBar.
Alternative to MacBook Pro 15
Dell XPS 15 (from $ 1,000)
Yes, yes, you were not mistaken. Another Dell. It may seem biased, considering that these laptops were recently considered to be consumer goods and were not associated with high quality. However, the company has grown strongly in recent years and today is the best manufacturer of Windows-based notebooks.
XPS 15 is something like XPS 13 on steroids. It was equipped with the same Infinity Edge display, but with a diagonal of more than two inches, and added more powerful hardware. For $ 1,000, again, the configuration is with Core i3, so we recommend at least a little more advanced – for $ 1,200, with a quad-core Core i5, 8 GB of RAM and 1 TB of hybrid storage, a 1080p display, and GTX 960M graphics. Except, in fact, the display, this machine is even more powerful than the MacBook.
Attention deserves the top-end modification of the Dell XPS 15 at a cost of $ 1,700. In addition to the Core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB solid state drive, this model also offers a battery of 84 Wh. According to the manufacturer, under optimum conditions, this will provide 17 hours of continuous operation.
The most pleasant thing is that even the premium version is $ 300 cheaper than the MacBook Pro 15 in the base version. Finally, Dell’s last advantage is its weight. The 15-inch laptop weighs only 1.7 kg – it’s 200 grams smaller than the MacBook Pro 15. This means that the Dell XPS 15 is actually even more powerful and portable than its more expensive alternative from Cupertino.
Alternative 12 “MacBook
Google Pixelbook (from $ 1,000)
Let’s be honest: Pixelbook is not an ideal laptop … just like a 12-inch MacBook. However, users interested in the MacBook with its slim, stylish and attractive design will almost certainly like the Pixelbook from Google.
In terms of performance, none of these models is designed for games or, say, video editing. However, with everyday tasks both the MacBook and the Pixelbook are doing admirably. Watch Netflix or YouTube and switch in parallel between 10-15 tabs in the browser? No problem for both, that’s just a price tag for the 12 “MacBook starts at $ 1,300, while the basic Pixelbook package will cost $ 1,000.
In addition, Pixelbook has one more important advantage. It’s not just a laptop, but a 2-in-1 device. You can deploy the lid and use it as a tablet. A good alternative to travel in public transport, where there are often too many people to pull out a regular laptop that can easily hook on clothes and drop or break.
Alternative to MacBook Air
Asus Zenbook UX330UA (from $ 750)
This is the perfect deal – not only because the Zenbook UX330UA is an excellent computer: it’s also more than attractive. For $ 750, you get a powerful laptop with good autonomy and a quality keyboard and display.
Asus managed to avoid the frequent mistake that manufacturers make when issuing budget notebooks: the company did not sacrifice any of the characteristics in order to reduce the price. UX330UA withstands 11 hours of battery life and is equipped with the latest Intel i5 processor of the eighth generation. In terms of performance, this model is capable of competing not only with the MacBook Air, but also with a minimal modification of the 12-inch MacBook. Given that the price difference between the latter and Asus is about $ 550, this is more than impressive.
The final touch and the last “for” in the money box Zenbook UX330UA – design. And it’s not that the laptop is beautiful (which is certainly true): this computer is even thinner than the MacBook.
