20 new iOS 12 settings you need to know about

The new version of iOS means new settings. Almost every new update function has its own section in Settings with mutable options. Moreover, there are several significant functions that work exclusively through Settings.

Below we will tell you about all the new settings for iOS 12, which you just need to know about.

1. Notifications

Along with the method of displaying notifications on the lock screen, the notification section in Settings is changed.

Now you will find in it three options: the lock screen, the notification center, and banners. Apple decided to return to the traditional Notification Center.

You can also choose the principle by which notifications in iOS 12 are grouped. Among them, automatically, by application or even off. If you select automatically, notifications will be combined according to context, correspondence or time. For example, notifications with messages from different dialogs in WhatsApp will be combined into different groups. You can also choose the option of combining by application, which is very convenient if you have a lot of messengers.

2. “Going to sleep” in the Do Not Disturb section

If you use the “Do Not Disturb” mode on a schedule, you will find a new option called “Going to sleep”. And it should be included.

The function makes the lock screen completely dark and does not allow any notifications on it. The smartphone will not light up and you will not see your notifications until you turn off the mode or until you wake up. In the morning the iPhone will show the weather forecast and wish you a good morning.

3. Screen Time

This is a completely new section of the Settings application, which is located right under the Do Not Disturb section. It includes many health-related functions, but its main goal is to provide you with information about exactly how you use your device, and how much time you spend in each application.

From the top you will see the time data as a graph. Swipe the screen below and see how much time was spent on each application.

Even lower you can find out how many times a day you use your smartphone, and for what purpose you take it the most.

4. Program limits

Program limits are a new feature from the Screen Time section. If you think that you spend too much time on an application, you can limit the available time to 30 minutes or 1 hour. When the limit reaches the end, you will receive a notification.

When the time is up, when the application starts, a screen with an alert will appear, but if you want it you can ignore it and use the application for another 15 minutes.

5. Downtime

Downtime is Do Not Disturb on Steroids mode, for which you can set the schedule. With it, each application will be blocked except those that you put on the exclusion list. This also applies to Safari sites. If you want to disaccustom yourself to use your smartphone at night, this function is just right for you.

6. Allowed applications

Permitted applications are exceptions for all limiting functions. If you add the application to this list, you can use it even with Do Not Disturb, Downtime, etc. mode. By default, the list contains Phone and Messages, but you can add any applications to it.

7. Content Restrictions

The Restrictions section in the Basic settings was moved to the Screen time section. Since it concerns the limitations of using the device, this makes sense. It is particularly convenient that here you can manage restrictions on other family access devices.

Here you can disable App Store purchases, specific applications, location services and content restrictions.

8. Scanning QR codes in the Control Point

Now you can add a QR code scan icon to the Control Point. Unfortunately, this is the only new iOS 12 icon. Click on it and the camera will open, ready to scan the code.

9. New wallpapers

What is the new version of iOS without new wallpapers? In the Wallpapers section you will find a new image that will decorate your screen.

10. Additional person for Face ID

In the Face ID section, a new feature has appeared that allows you to add an additional face for Face ID. If you need to temporarily change your appearance, you can create an additional person scan.

You can add the face of a completely different person. With this trick, your iPhone can unlock someone else.

11. New battery statistics

By opening the Battery section in Settings, you will see a new interactive graph of battery usage for the last 24 hours and 7 days. Below it is a list of applications that are consumed by the charge. You can click on them to see the exact time of use.

12. Siri Shortcuts

The Shortcuts application has not yet come out, but the Siri Shortcuts function can be found in the Siri section and search in Settings. There you will find the recommended actions and will be able to record phrases for their activation.

For example, there may be a shortcut to the opening of a site, etc. You can even send a single message to a specific person in a specific application.

This function will also help to get rid of the Siri problem with a misunderstanding of some words. This often happens if you speak with an accent.

13. Icons in Safari

It’s amazing that this function is not enabled by default. It shows the icons of the sites on the tabs in Safari.

It’s worth noting that these are real site icons, not copies from Apple.

14. Shares

In Settings, the Promotion section appeared, in which you can disable access to mobile data and background updates, and reset application settings.

15. New Records section

The updated application Dictaphone has received a separate section of the Record in the Settings. There are three options. You can change the format of records, date format and delete records after 30 days. Perhaps this is a bug of the first beta version, but the removal is enabled by default, so check this nuance.

16. Measure

The new Measure application also received a separate section in Settings. So far, there is only one option – the ability to switch between different measurement systems.

17. Auto Updates

The Auto Update section appeared in the Software Update section. If you enable the feature, new versions of the system will be installed on your device automatically. By default, it is disabled.

18. Autocomplete passwords

In Passwords and accounts, a new option has appeared that allows you to enable and disable autocomplete one-time passwords received via SMS.

19. Podcasts

Now in the Podcast section you can set the rewind time from 10 to 60 seconds.

20. Apple Books

In Apple Books, you can synchronize the books that you are reading now.
